Academic Probation
Students performing at unsatisfactory or marginal levels, despite accommodations and interventions by the school, may be placed on academic probation. Academic probation may be initiated upon the recommendation of teachers and counselors, and approved by administration.
The purpose of academic probation is to encourage students to regain a satisfactory academic standing, and for parents and school to renew their joint commitment in this process. While on probation, students are expected to take full advantage of extra help. Students who continue to have difficulties and show little evidence of trying to improve may be asked to leave KS.
Students on academic probation are not permitted to represent the school in any activities for a minimum of a two (2) week period. Administrative clearance to resume participation in activities does not remove the student from academic probation.
Students who continue to remain on academic probation are evaluated at the end of each grading period, in order to review what student progress has been made. Teacher comments, participation in study help sessions, and completion of class/homework assignments are some examples of areas which reflect student effort.
STUDENTS WHO CONTINUE TO HAVE DIFFICULTIES AND SHOW LITTLE EVIDENCE OF TRYING TO IMPROVE, MAY BE ASKED TO LEAVE KAMEHAMEHA SCHOOLS.
Eligibility to Represent Kamehameha Schools
Students who represent KS must be in good standing for academics and conduct. The guidelines below are in effect for all co-and extra-curricular activities and honorary positions including: Athletics, Performing Arts, Math Team, Academic Decathlon Team, and KHS Student Council.
Conduct Ineligibility:
Students who are on "conduct probation" are ineligible to represent the school for a minimum of a two (2) week period. The dates and duration of the ineligibility period will be determined by the Principal or Vice Principal.
Academic Ineligibility:
Students with an "F" grade, or two (2) or more "D" grades for the quarter, are ineligible to represent the school for a minimum of a two (2) week period. This includes students who are declared ineligible and are unable to clear the deficient grade, because they are no longer in the course. The following guidelines are in place:
Ineligibility Based on Grades During 1 st - 3 rd Quarters:
The ineligibility period starts on the next Monday (Tuesday, if Monday is a non-school day) after grades are posted, through a minimum two (2) week period. Beginning with the third (3 rd ) week after grades are posted, students may be active again if a written clearance from the Principal is obtained. Students may continue to practice with their teams or groups during the ineligibility period.
Ineligibility Based on Grades from 4 th Quarter:
Students with an "F" grade, or two (2) or more "D" grades during the 4th quarter, will be ineligible for at least the first two (2) weeks of the next school year. Beginning with the third (3 rd ) week of the term, the student may become active if a written clearance is obtained from the Principal. This guideline includes new students admitted on probation. Students may continue to practice with their teams or groups during the ineligibility period.
Students with Two (2) or More "F" Grades:
These students will be allowed to practice, however will NOT be allowed to compete for a minimum period of four (4) weeks. Beginning with the fifth (5th) week of the quarter, the student may become active again if a written clearance is obtained from the Principal.
Special Note for Athletes: Athletes with a quarter GPA below 2.0 will be ineligible to compete in state tournaments.
