Teacher and Course Information

Mr. Ryan Cabalse
Science

Aloha! I’m Mr. Ryan Cabalse, Conceptual Physics teacher and Ke `Ano advisor. I am originally from Kaneohe on the island of O`ahu. During my 8th year, I moved to the Big Island where I eventually graduated from Waiakea High School in 1993. After my graduation, I attended the University of Hawai`i at Hilo on a cross country scholarship and earned a bachelor’s degree in Natural Science with a minor in Earth and Space Science. During my experiences in high school and college athletics, I grew a big interest in coaching younger people. The excitement and enjoyment of helping these young men and women achieve goals is what ignited my eventual dream of being a high school teacher and coach here in Hawaii. Prior to teaching here at Kamehameha Hawai`i, I worked for three years at Honoka`a High School and two years at Kea`au High school. During this time I taught math (Algebra I, Algebra II, Interactive Mathematics, & Industrial Math) and science (Chemistry & Physics) courses. I also coached approximately six years of Track and Field and four years of Cross Country. I have truly enjoyed my time here at Kamehameha Schools Hawaii at will continue to do my best in educating the young men and women of Hawaiian ancestry.

Course Overview

In addition to Ke `Ano, I teach 9th grade science (Conceptual Physics) over the course of the school year:
Conceptual Physics Length / Credit: 1 year / 1.0 credit
Grade: Required for all Grade 9 students
Physics is a course that covers all of the fundamentals through the development of conceptual ideas. Comprehension of concepts before calculation is the key to success in this class. Physics is viewed as the basic rules of nature. Learning these rules will help a student see the world around him/her in a different way.

The course follows a three-stage learning cycle and it is as follows:

· Exploration – utilizing prior knowledge to develop meaningful questions for investigating and testing
· Concept Development – understanding how a concept relates to other concepts and to what meaningful conclusions can be determined
· Application – how can the concepts learned be used to enhance someone’s lifestyle
The course will be one year long and is designed to prepare a freshman student for the following years of Chemistry and Biology (hopefully further as well). The course is required for all of Grade 9 as they will be receiving a credit for the year and thus fulfills one of the three science requirements

Instructors Philosophy of Education

My Beliefs:
1. Demonstrating and showing how something works gives the background; hands-on/ personal work gives the experience
2. Being comfortable and doing something you already know is not learning; being uncomfortable and doing something new that you don’t know is learning
3. Energy and love for the subject will transfer positive impressions to students
4. I really want a student to experience my class, rather than just take my class, because this is where they will use and apply their knowledge in life
