Personal Health

It is such a pleasure to be part of the wonderful living legacy that Pauahi has left for us. I humbly ask for your prayers and support in guiding your children through this amazing educational journey. I have been blessed with 6 years of service at Kamehameha Schools. I started out at Waiakea Intermediate School where I taught P.E. and Health for over 17 years. I was fortunate to teach at Hilo Intermediate for 1 year before I accepted the P.E./ Health Position at Kamehameha School.

I currently teach 9th grade Health which encompasses the Lokahi Wheel of Health. The highlight of the semester is participation in the Health Fair and Health Variety Show. I also help monitor students progress in Fitness Maintenance. The highlight being a community fitness event that is required by April. This year is my first senior Ke` Ano class and I’m excited about helping our seniors apply for college and or work related experience. Helping seniors prepare for real life will be a highlight for me!

Course Overview

The Lokahi Wheel is the foundation for Kamehameha Schools Health Program.

We also explore a variety of health related topics: sex, community and environmental health, drugs, injury prevention and care, and personal and consumer health, nutrition and cooking. The highlight of this course, according to the students, is preparing a three course meal. In my opinion the highlight is the annual Health Fair. Students spend countless hours selecting a topic, researching and creating a health display board. Through this research process students learn how to make Decisions and set Goals to enhance their health. Students learn Core Concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention. Learn how to Access Information and find health promoting products and services. Which gives them an opportunity to Practice Self Management or otherwise know as, health-enhancing behaviors, that reduce health risks. The research process lends itself to Analyzing Influences of culture, family, peers, media, technology, and other factors on health.
At the actual Health Fair students will Utilizing Interpersonal Communication skills to enhance health of their community which leads to Advocacy, students advocate for personal, family and community health.

Human Development is a course offering for those seeking endorsement in the Health and Wellness Academy. It is a content heavy course that requires serious effort. The text, Human Odyssey remains committed to telling both sides of a story; it seeks to clarify disputes, placing them into sharper focus for the reader. Controversial issues are not omitted. The Human Odyssey offers a balanced among childhood, adolescence and adulthooDuring the semester students will cover the following topics

Along with the freshman health class, we will follow our Kamehameha Schools Health and Wellness Standards when we produce our Health Fair .

Instructors Philosophy of Education

I have always felt that teaching is a vocation and that is takes support from students and their families. My goal is that all students have a successful learning experience. First and foremost the material to learn must be relevant and timely. The teacher's role is to gather that information and present it in a manner that shows enthusiasm for the topic. The learner needs to be prepared and convey a willingness to initially learn. True learning occurs once the student shares or expands on that knowledge. The most import link in the learning process is a family that helps the student meet his or her emotional, physically and spiritual needs. Only than can a young adult be successful at Kamehameha Schools.

Interest & Hobbies

I discovered a few years ago that homemade gifts are so well received. So, I learned to sew a mean baby blanket. I’ve also discovered that if I want to eat as much as I do I need to swim everyday.
