Mrs.
Hanakahi Perreira
Hawaiian Language
Aloha mai! My name is Hanakahi Perreira. I was born and raised in Hilo and I have been working at Kamehameha for the past 6 years. I previously worked as a Hawaiian Language teacher at both the elementary and middle school divisions, before becoming a teacher at the high school in 2004. Prior to working at Kamehameha, I was a teacher at Ke Kula 'O Nawahiokalani'opu'u, where I taught a number of different classes in the medium of Hawaiian language.

- Hawaiian Language III (Period 7) develops more complex language structures and introduces the student to short authentic literary and auditory selections. The primary objective is to further develop the student’s oral, aural, and writing skills. Much of the class will be conducted in Hawaiian.
- In Hawaiian Language IV (Periods 3, 4, & 5), students’ understanding of native speech is enhanced through authentic literature, video, and audio texts. Hawaiian is the language of instruction.
- Hawaiian Language V (Period 3) is an advanced level of study in the Hawaiian language. It is designed to perfect language proficiencies developed at earlier stages through extensive reading, writing, oral discussions, and cultural research. Hawaiian is the language of instruction.

My goal is to help students learn and embrace their language and culture. I believe that learning language and culture will help students to develop a positive sense of being.
