Teacher and Course Information

Mrs. Elizabeth Truesdell
English Language Arts

Aloha!

I joined the Kamehameha Schools Hawai`i High School English department in 2004, transferring from Kamehameha Schools Kapälama, where I taught for 17 years. Prior to teaching at the Kapälama campus, I taught at The Annie Wright School—an Episcopal day and boarding school in Tacoma, Washington. During my years in the classroom, I have taught grades seven through 12, composition and literature, and advised student publications. I was born and raised in Washington state, but have lived the last two decades in Hawai`i.

Course Overview

English 11 (periods 1, 2, 5)—Teaching partner Clint Anderson and I make up the junior English team. English 11 has a dual focus on World Literature through the ages and expository writing, with particular attention to essays of comparison, literary analysis, and personal essays that help prepare students for the college application process.

Newswriting (period 4)—This elective course serves as a beginning journalism class, in addition to a publication class that produces Na `Öiwi o Hawai`i, the high school newspaper.

Instructors Philosophy of Education

I believe in the spirit of inquiry and the merits of drive, diligence, intellectual curiosity, and pride in one’s work. I believe in the well-crafted sentence and value of reading good writing—literature and non-fiction—to see others’ views and experiences of life. I believe we all can, and should, learn from others: teachers and students, readers and characters from literature. I believe in both compassion and accountability. I believe that we all can do much more than we think we can, but that we are often limited by our minds and our assumptions about ourselves. I believe that learning can take place everywhere and in every relationship, but that ultimately each individual is responsible for his or her own learning—with the help and support of others. I believe we all can, and do, make a difference.
