English Language Arts
Before being hired by Kamehameha Schools in June 2006, I had been a frequent visitor to the Big Island, and my husband and I bought a place up the Hamakua Coast in 2002. I have been an English, speech, and media teacher since 1989 in Minnesota, where I grew up and where my mother, father, maternal grandparents, and a great-grandfather all taught. Teaching is in my blood and in my heart. Here at KS, I teach seniors a curriculum focused on British Literature with a special emphasis on writing, and am an advisor for senior Ke ‘Ano.

Language Arts 12 – British Literature is a course that encompasses major prose and poetry of English writers from the Anglo-Saxon period to the present. The goal is to acquire an understanding of the ideas and literary genres that defines these periods and to build a foundation for advanced studies in English literature. All readings will be considered in a literary and historical context so that the student will gain an understanding of the historical, cultural and philosophical influences that shape the texts. Readings may be supplemented with other material and/or experiences. Students will express their understanding of key concepts through class discussions, writing assignments, projects, and presentations.

With the appropriate motivation (and the recognition that sometimes that motivation comes from inside the individual), all students can learn what they need to know to become concerned and capable citizens of the world in the 21st Century.

My undergraduate degrees are in Speech Communication/Theatre Arts and English, and I have a graduate degree in Educational Leadership. In 1988, I taught five classes (four different grade levels) at a little high school in western Minnesota, and have been teaching and coaching since then at the high school, university, and middle school levels.

Everything is interesting to me, and my free time is spent gardening, sewing, reading, singing, and eating.
