Mrs. Corrine Kanno
English Language Arts

Through reading literature by American authors, students will further develop their ability to read with understanding, focusing on such concepts as developing opinions and evaluating author’s purpose, tone, style and diction. Students also will work on improving writing skills, with an emphasis on paraphrasing, summarizing, and writing persuasive essays and reviews. The course also will include vocabulary development and understanding of grammar. It will help students apply language skills and reading comprehension skills in standardized testing such as PSAT, required for all juniors.

Teacher and Course Introduction

Born and raised in Hilo, I have lived here almost all of my life. I am truly a “small town girl” and am quite content with that label.

Instructors Philosophy of Education

I believe that learning is a life-long experience and that we are all constantly learning every day. Not only do I help my students learn, but I learn from their experiences and their perspectives. It makes me value each one of my students and appreciate their individuality.

Ke `Ano, Club Advisor or Coach - Overview

The theme of the 10th grade Ke’Ano is to Explore. During this time, students will engage in nohona Hawai’i, character education, career exploration, and school to work skills. They will also have the opportunity for study hall. As their advisor, my responsibility is to ensure that they complete their assigned tasks, provide guidance as needed, and to monitor student progress.

Education and Background Experience

I graduated from Hilo High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in English from UH-Hilo. I also have a teaching certificate from UH-Hilo. I have a total of twelve years of teaching experience.

Interest & Hobbies

During the fall and winter, much of my Sunday afternoon is spent watching NFL. Otherwise, during my free time I enjoy sewing, playing with my pets, and curling up with a good book.
