We seek to understand this: the true goal of education is liberation (Halemakua).
It is time to move into consciousness. The great divides of distance have
been bridged, barriers removed. Technology has allowed us opportunities
to attain knowledge in ways, and at speeds, never before seen in history.
We are at a point in our lives where the availability of information is
as it never was. It’s time to communicate – time to speak, time
to listen. We must realize that dualities are but mere constructs. The ability
to convey clear and effective messages is a necessity; as cultures collide,
our survival depends on it.
Ready? Here we go…

Through reading literature in World cultures and history, students will further develop their ability to read with understanding, focusing on such concepts as developing opinions and evaluating author’s purpose, tone, style and diction. Students also will work on improving writing skills with an emphasis on paraphrasing, summarizing and writing comparison-contrast essays and reviews. The course also will include vocabulary development and understanding grammar. It will help students apply language skills and reading comprehension skills in standardized testing such as the PSAT, required for all juniors. Readings will include selected plays, novels, non-fiction, short stories, and poetry.

In class we will seek to explore the fundamental idea of universality through
specificity. Through the words of individuals, the world will reveal itself
in illuminating ways. The implication here is simple: through the study
of specific cultures and ideas, understanding of the world as a whole will
increase. Through understanding, meaning is able to take root. Through meaning
we find our purposes.
This brings us to another focus of the course: the triangulation of meaning.
This is a concept that implies that meaning is constructed at the moment
that the elements of body, mind, and spirit are engaged to form knowledge.
Every learning opportunity (lesson, unit), will be discussed within the
context of the triangulation of meaning. We will delve further into the
interworkings of this idea as the year progresses.
While we journey English Language Arts 11 together, on the path to truth
during this school year, we ponder the following `olelo no`eau which we
will revisit time and time again:
‘A‘ohe pau ka ‘ike i ka halau ho‘okahi
All knowledge is not taught in the same school. One can learn from many
sources.
This is the major force behind the study of World Literature, for we have
much to learn from the peoples of the world, much to learn from ourselves.
At the end of the school year it is my hope that students are able to recognize,
value, and find joy in the realization that the thoughts of others are really
thoughts of their own, and that the peoples of the world are essentially
a people.
Ho a‘e ka ‘ike he‘enalu i ka hokua o ka ‘ale
Show your knowledge of surfing on the back of the wave.
This `olelo no`eau is most applicable to students’ daily success;
it mirrors the thoughts of Plato, who proclaimed that knowledge is only
useful in its application. It is not enough that we simply acquire information;
we must apply information in a manner that is beneficial to ourselves and
to others. Recognize that as we gain knowledge, we must also give knowledge.
Knowledge is only useful in its application. We will seek to find meaning
and purpose in everything we do! If we can manage to do this, life will
be a lot easier, if not more enjoyable!

When not reading student essays and writing poetry, I can be found somewhere sunny, spending time with my wife and two children.
