Students need the basic, critical, and inquiry skills to be productive
in and out of the classroom.
Students need to understand their own learning style, their strengths and
weaknesses in order to be secure in their learning.
As there are various ways of learning, so should there be various ways of
teaching. In other words, students should be given many opportunities to
excel in their own particular way.
School is a two way street where teachers and students share and receive
something worthwhile.
Students need to see personal and global connections in their studies.
Students flourish in a nurturing environment that is firm, consistent, and
fair.

I attended Waiakeawaena, Waiakea Intermediate, Hilo High on the island of Hawaii. I studied nursing at Central Philippine University then transferred to Silliman University to major in speech and theatre arts with a minor in journalism. During the summer of my senior year, I delved into radio and television production. Upon completion of my teaching certificate and professional diploma at the University of Hawaii at Hilo, I taught at Hilo Intermediate and Keaau High.
Being interested in the cultures of Asia and the Pacific, I was privileged to travel to mainland China on a study grant from the Consortium for Teaching Asia and Pacific in the Schools (CTAPS). I also traveled to Pohnpei in the Federated States of Micronesia as a presenter in the Pacific Educational Conference (PEC). I have kept abreast of Pacific issues by being a member of the Association for Social Anthropology in Oceania (ASAO), by attending conferences sponsored by the Center for Pacific Islands Studies, University of Hawai`i at Manoa, and by reading the latest fiction and nonfiction literature regarding the Pacific and its peoples.
