Grade 10 Counselor
Team Leader
Born and raised on the Island of Moloka`i, the second eldest of four children (one brother & two sisters).
Mr. Helm worked as a site coordinator/college & career counselor for the Kamehameha Schools Talent Search Program from 1990 through 1999. The program provided college and career counseling to disadvantage youth from 6th – 12th grade in selected east Hawai`i public schools. In June of 1999, Mr. Helm was hired by Casey Family Programs as a Career & Transition Specialist, assisting youth in foster care in preparing for independent living. He also served as a Diversity Coordinator assuring that youth and families cultural needs were met. Mr. Helm also held assistant basketball coaching positions at St. Joseph High and Kamehameha Schools Hawai`i.

His philosophy of education is rooted by who he is as a kanaka maoli and his understanding and belief in Hawaiian self-determination. He believes education with cultural and real life relevance is important for Hawaiian people to survive and succeed in this society. He also believes a good education will develop a person’s ability to think critically to help them make key decisions in their life.

A 1985 graduate of Moloka`i High School. Mr. Helm transplanted to Hilo to attend Hawai`i Community College and the University of Hawaii at Hilo. In 1990, graduated from the University of Hawai`i at Hilo with a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology. He later attended the California State University - Long Beach Occupational Studies Master’s Program, completed course work in 1998.

Mr. Helm resides in Puna and is happily married to Kapua Helm who teaches 6th grade English at the KSHC middle school. He is a proud father of Kilinoelehua Aiko Helm who keeps him very active. He spends his free time working around the house, fishing and returns to Moloka`i to be with his family.
Mr. Helm is truly honored and excited to be here at Kamehameha Schools
Hawai`i and look forward to serving his students, families and staff.
