Mrs.

Grade 9 Counselor
Aloha mai käkou,
As the Class of 2012 high school counselor, “E komo mai”, welcome to our exciting journey this 2008-2009 school year. Born and raised in Hawai`i, I am profoundly committed to serve Ke Ali`i Bernice Pauahi Bishop’s wishes “to educate children and youth of Hawaiian ancestry to become good and industrious men and women”.
Teacher or Counseling Philosophy
As one of four high school counselors at Kamehameha Schools Hawai`i, I follow Class of 2012 over the course of their four years. This enables a holistic and proactive approach to serve our students’ academic, personal/social and career developmental needs. The transition from high school to college is filled with challenges, opportunities and decision-making.
My commitment is to help our students better understand themselves, their interests, talents, skills, dreams and goals so that they can make the decision that is right for them. Our counseling motto is a beacon to guide our students, “E Ho`okele Pono”…The power to choose what is right for you lies in your na`au. You choose.
College Preparation Checklist for Grade 9 & 10 students:
- Take a rigorous program of study with focus on the “core courses” of English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies & World Language.
- Develop disciplined study habits.
- Read, read, read. Visit College Board’s website’s 101 Great Books.
- Become acquainted with your high school counselor.
- Create a four-year high school plan.
- Become involved in school or community-based extracurricular activities that will enable you to explore your interests, meet new people and learn new things.
- Grades 10 &11 Kamehameha Schools Hawai`i students will take the PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test). The test is administered in October of each year. It provides preparation for the SAT and is the qualifying test in their junior year for the National Merit Scholarship Program.
Education and Background Experience
With a Masters in Social Work from the University of Hawai`i at Mänoa, I served children and families for over 25 years within the cornerstones of Child Welfare, Family Court, Foster Care and Education. This is my fifth year with Kamehameha Schools Hawai`i after graduating the Class of 2008 and I am honored.
Me ke aloha,
Jan Ching
