Service Learning Coordinator:

Grade 9
Team Leaders: Mrs. Volivar Fry and Mrs. Tavares
Students will create and present a children’s book for a 0-8 Hawaiian charter pre-school.  The books will focus on our Makahiki event. Our purpose is to promote literacy in young children (0-8 initiative).

Grade 10
Team Leaders: Mrs. Baptista and Mrs. Enanoria
Our grade 10 students participated in a 2 part beautification process at Pohoiki.  They were in charge of 3 projects: creating recycling bins for the park, cleaning up the warm pond, and cleaning the park area and walkways.  They learned about native plants in their classes and will be planting them in April when they return to Pohoiki.

Arts & Communications
Team Leader: Mrs. Bartels
Our ceramics students created ornaments to sell for the Hawaii Food Basket, while our film students travelled to Waipio trip to generate a hula video. This was in, collaboration with our elementary school since they were workiing on electronic media projects. Our choir shared their vocal talents with Haili Church.

Business & Leadership
Team Leader: Mr. Rose

The Business and Leadership Academy took on two projects for service learning this year. One project benefited the residents of Life Care Center in Hilo. The students planned an event, brought elaborate decorations, entertained and built relationships with the residences during the holiday season. The residents were very encouraged, as well as the employees of the Life Care Center. Several students returned for visits on their own time. The second project was a Documentary in the cause of dealing with teen stress. The students worked hard both on the planning and filming of this documentary. It is in hopes that they will be able to use this documentary to present this cause to the three campuses, as well as other high schools in the area. Imua Kamehameha!

Engineering & Design
Team Leader: Mr. Alameida

The students in the Engineering and Design Academy participated in a huaka‘i to Kahuwai, an ahupua‘a in the district of Puna, as their service learning project. Kahuwai is also the name of an ancient Hawaiian village approximately 600 years old that sits on land that is a part of Kamehameha Schools. The area is rich in history and culture. Stone foundations and burial sites are still visible today. Students applied their knowledge and skills to help mālama Kahuwai. Using their knowledge and skills from Construction classes students were able to roughly estimate potential repairs to the cabin on the property, completed rough sketches of structures that existed in earlier times and completed a general cleaning of the area of shrubbery to further reveal structures within the village site. In addition, students gained historical knowledge of Kahuwai through mo‘olelo and hands on activities.

Health & Wellness
Team Leader: Mrs. Perreira
Teachers will work collectively with students to create a series of “Did You Know?” posters displaying health facts focusing on one major health topic. Upon completion, the poster sets will be donated and distributed to health teachers at various public/private/charter schools (including immersion) in the district of Puna.

Science & Natural Resources
Team Leader: Mr. Richards

Biology classes target the area that Ho`ike will focus on and try to grow a better understanding of the place by visiting and assessing natural resources.  This year, we selected Waipi`o Valley, where students hiked in and out, helped to clean a lo`i kalo, completed a math activity dealing with water flow, and completed a poetry assignment near the falls at Hi`ilawe.  It was a great day and we were of service to both the Waipi`o community, Ke Ana La`ahana Charter School (who accompanied us), and most of all, ourselves.  Students also got a little more of a background on the district we are studying, the history of the area, and some stories.

Kamehameha High School - Service Learning

The mission of the Kamehameha Schools is to fulfill Princess Pauahi's desire to create educational opportunities in perpetuity to improve the capability and well-being of people of Hawaiian ancestry.

Service is the giving of oneself to benefit another.

Service-Learning involves learning through experience, where students apply academic knowledge and critical thinking skills to address genuine community needs. It is a method of teaching that combines service objectives, with the intent that the activity changes both the recipient and dthe provider of the service. The following are basic criteria for a Kamehameha school project to be deemed service-learning or service:
